Multiscale Characterization of Degradation Mechanism in LiFePO4 Battery Cathodes with Prolonged Electrochemical Cycling

چکیده
The scope of the current research is to characterize aging mechanisms in LiFePO4 battery cathodes at the nanometer length scale. For this purpose, we wish to use Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) in the low loss regime in the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) to identify and quantify the phases formed in the cathode as the battery is discharged. The above phase identification and quantification process will be performed on an unaged cell and a matrix of aged cells, providing insight into the aging process in these cathodes at the proposed length scale.

Electrochemical in battery polymerization of poly(alkylenedioxythiophene) over lithium iron phosphate for high-performance cathodes.
A molecular wiring concept was induced in LiFePO4 cathodes by in battery polymerization methods. This was performed by the addition of alkylthiophene monomers over the LiFePO4-based cathode during the first charging step in lithium test cells. The driving force for the in battery polymerization of the monomers was supplied by the oxidizing current and by the physical contact of monomers with de...
متن کاملSuppression of Phase Separation in LiFePO4 Nanoparticles During Battery Discharge
Using a novel electrochemical phase-field model, we question the common belief that LixFePO4 nanoparticles separate into Li-rich and Li-poor phases during battery discharge. For small currents, spinodal decomposition or nucleation leads to moving phase boundaries. Above a critical current density (in the Tafel regime), the spinodal disappears, and particles fill homogeneously, which may explain...
متن کاملHybrid supercapacitor-battery materials for fast electrochemical charge storage
High energy and high power electrochemical energy storage devices rely on different fundamental working principles--bulk vs. surface ion diffusion and electron conduction. Meeting both characteristics within a single or a pair of materials has been under intense investigations yet, severely hindered by intrinsic materials limitations. Here, we provide a solution to this issue and present an app...
متن کاملIn-Situ TEM Electrochemical Processes in Conversion-Based Li-Ion Battery Electrodes
Intercalation-based cathode materials such as LiCoO2 (~140 mAh/g) and LiFePO4 (~160 mAh/g) are predominantly used in lithium-ion batteries because they provide exceptional cycling reversibility [1]. However, these materials have low capacity as they are limited to single electron charge transfer reaction, and thus are unlikely candidates for use in electric vehicles (EVs). Conversion compounds ...
متن کاملColumnar order in jammed LiFePO4 cathodes: ion transport catastrophe and its mitigation.
The high-rate, high-capacity potential of LiFePO4-based lithium-ion battery cathodes has motivated numerous experimental and theoretical studies aiming to realize such performance through nano-sizing, tailoring of particle shape through synthesis conditions, and doping. Here, a granular mechanics study of microstructures formed by dense jammed packings of experimentally and theoretically inspir...
